Zenly shut down in February 2023 and people are still looking for the thing it did: knowing who is around without having to text everyone first. Tex has Radar, which is close to that, but it is not the same idea and it is worth knowing where it differs before you install it.
Radar shows who is near you right now, and what people left around you.
You find people you have not met yet, near you or by what they are into.
It is free, and it runs in a browser — nothing to install.
What Tex does differently
Radar is something you turn on for a while, not a setting you leave on forever. Being visible is a choice you make each time.
Tex never sends anyone your exact coordinates. What travels is distance and direction already computed on the server, so nobody — including another user — gets a point on a map where you are standing.
Tex also does the thing Zenly never did: you can leave something pinned to a real place for whoever passes by later to find.
Where Zenly is better
This section is here because a comparison where the author wins everything
is not worth reading. These are real, and they are the reasons to stay where you are.
Zenly was a live map of your friends, always on. Tex is not that, and if what you miss is opening an app and seeing where everyone is at any moment, Tex will feel colder.
Zenly had years of friends already on it. Tex is small and new: whoever you want to see there has to come along.
